[14 July 2012] Suu Kyi silent on Muslims cleansing in Myanmar - English A program against a population of Muslims called the Rohingyas began in June, which has been called an ethnic cleansing of the Muslim population. Why hasn't this received more international coverage? Certainly, Myanmar has become an example of democracy as deemed recently by the United States, the European Union and Canada. In this news analysis examines why the Rohingya Muslims, as they are called, are facing this fate, as Myanmar's President Thein Sein says Rohingya Muslims must be expelled from the country and sent to refugee camps run by the United Nations, who have in turn, refused them.

During times of deep trial, despair, and sadness, Muslims must seek comfort and guidance in the words of god in the Qur'an. God reminds Muslims that all people will be tried and tested in life, and calls upon Muslims to bear these trials with patient perseverance and prayer. But believers are called to put their trust in their Lord, and not to fall into despair or hopelessness. In the Qur'an, God has described Himself as: "The one who created death and life to test you as to which of you is best in deed." The Holy Qur'an, (67:2) There are many versus that guide Muslims on how to respond to difficult situations when their faith and their belief are tested such as: Seek Allah's help with patient perseverance and prayer. It is indeed hard except for those who are humble." (2:45) 'To Allah we belong, and to Him is our return.' They are those on whom descend blessings from their Lord, and mercy. They are the ones who receive guidance." (2:155-157) "Be patient, for your patience is with the help of Allah." (16:127) The killing of three Muslim men in Britain's recent unrest, revealed how a Muslim family uses these Islamic principles to overcome such a tragedy. Looking at Britain's unrest, and the Birmingham tragedy in this edition of the show we ask the following question: How can Muslims remain calm, forgiving, but determined to defend unjustified attacks?

Muslims are still being portrayed as 'the other' in western movies especially Hollywood. The events of 9/11 brought this representation to its peak with the continuous negative stereotype Muslims encountered since that date. But why should Islam as a religion and Muslims as believers be negatively represented even in entertainment production? Many Arabs and Arab filmmakers view the portrayal of the Arab world in the West as a major obstacle to screening, publicizing, and appreciating a fundamentally vibrant Arab film culture. In hundreds of Hollywood films Arabs and Muslims are the bad guys, and the good guys are out to eliminate them. In this edition of the show we ask the following question: Why are Muslims represented as the 'bad guys' in western movies?

Historical events are at times extremely influential in transforming human thought, politics and the structure of society. One of such historical events in Islam was Qadir event which happened in 632 AD. Shortly before his death prophet Muhammad undertook a farewell pilgrimage. It has been recorded by numerous historians that on their return journey, he commanded all the Muslims to gather so that he may recite for them a crucial sermon. Then the prophet declared Imam Ali\'s guardianship as his own. He said: Whoever I am the master of; this Ali is the master of. Although Imam Ali, peace be upon him, is the first Imam for Shia Muslims, the Qadir event is indeed a factor for unity among Shia and Sunni Muslims. On such occasion, an international congress has been held in Iran to study more about Qadir. Dozens of scholars from Iran and other countries attended the congress presenting articles on different aspects of Qadir event. Unlike a false belief which considers Qadir as the origin of disunity between Shias and Sunnis, Qadir promotes unity among Muslims. Religious experts say once Qadir is explained to all, Muslim unity will be achieved because Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) recommended Muslims on Qadir day to obey both Qur\'an and his holy household.

Indiscriminate killings of Muslims continue in the Central African Republic. The Christian militiamen have issued an ultimatum to Muslims taking refuge in a church to either leave the country or face death. Nearly 800 Muslims are hiding in a Catholic Church in the southwestern town of Carnot. Some of them fled from a remote village of Guen after militia known as the anti-Balaka massacred at least 70 people earlier this month. The militia is now threatening to burn the church to the ground. The sectarian conflict in the African nation has so far claimed over a thousand lives. Human rights groups have already documented a wave of violent attacks against Muslims throughout the country. Tens of thousands have also fled for their lives to neighboring countries. The bloodshed continues despite the deployment of thousands of French and African peacekeepers.

Muslims in Germany have been going through the state of torment in the past few years. There have been many discriminatory incidents against Muslims by members of the public including a Muslim woman who was stabbed to death in a court, attacks to graveyards and mosques and a call for burqa ban as well. Even politicians have made such remarks. German chancellor, Angela Merkel has also recently commented that Muslims are failing to integrate in Germany. This episode of Press TV's Islam & Life will investigate: what is the state of Muslims in Germany?

Muslims in Brussels are still mourning the death of an imam who died of suffocation a couple of days ago. The 46-year-old imam, Abdallah Dadou, was in this Shia mosque to lead an evening prayer when a man came in and set the place on fire after spreading flammable liquid. Apart from being sad, Muslims here are also shocked by the attack. According to the police, the suspect, now in custody, identified himself a Salafi. Salafi extremists have always tried to put a rift between Sunnis and Shias but worshippers here say Sunnis and Shias have never had any problems living together in this country. Experts agree that this attack does not represent reality. Semsettin Ugurlu is the president of the Muslim Executive of Belgium [shot of him]. He says he has never seen anything but good relationships between the two religious groups. The official motivations for the attack are still under investigation. But Ugurlu says there is a lesson to be learned and a question to be answered: what led the attacker to do this? Was he influenced by certain books or by things he read on the Internet? There are still no answers. The only reality for now is the shock and sorrow of Muslims - here in Brussels and in the rest of the country. As the worshippers behind me mourn the death of the imam, they emphasize that Shiite and Sunni Muslims have always lived in peace together here in Belgium. They also say Europe needs to make sure that such a crime will not happen again.

[12 Aug 2012] Muslims in Iran mark last night of honor - English Prayers and invocations at the last Latlat ul-Qadr or the night of honor; a night sacred to all Muslims. In the Islamic culture the word Qadr is equal to honor and dignity. Every year during the 19th, 21st, and 23rd of the holy month of Ramadan in the Islamic Lunar calendar Muslims stay awake and pray through out the entire night. The ceremony known as Ehya is a chance for them to pray and ask for God's blessing. Iranians mark these nights by gathering in mosques; they pray for the sick and those in need as well as their loved ones.

Parliament has returned from its summer recess and British politics is back on the agenda. The ability to influence another individual is a much sought-after skill. But the ability to influence an entire nation\'s politics can only be imagined. Maybe we Muslims set our aims too high. Even small changes can greatly benefit the lives of Muslims living in the West. But how can we Islamically engage in western politics when it takes away people\'s rights, takes their money and harms people in other countries? How can we influence non-Islamic governments? Shia and Sunni Muslims have held a ceremony in Indian-Controlled Kashmir to mark the birth anniversary of Islam\'s Prophet, Mohammad (pbuh).The ceremony was part of week-long celebrations during the \"unity week\" which is an occasion to symbolize unity among all Muslims. Myanmar's President Thein Sein said on July 19 that the "only solution" to the plight of Rohingya Muslims is to send the country's nearly one million Muslims -- which the UN says is one of the world's most persecuted minorities -- to refugee camps run by United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). However, the UN refugee agency has snubbed the idea of setting up refugee camps to accommodate the Rohingyas. "We will send them away if any third country would accept them," Sein added. "This is what we are thinking is the solution to the issue." The UN says decades of discrimination have left the Rohingyas stateless, with Myanmar implementing restrictions on their movement and withholding land rights, education and public services.

Sunday evening was a moment of joy for hundreds of rohingiya muslims in New Delhi who have been ignored by the world community and left into destitution. A nonprofit organization khudai khidmatgaar arranged an iftaar for these people who are running short of food supplies, water and other basic essentials during this holy month of Ramadan.

The first day of the lunar month of Shawaal marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, which is celebrated by Muslims as the Eid-ul-Fitr or the feast of fast- breaking worldwide. In capital Tehran, massive crowds of people gathered at University of Tehran and surrounding areas to perform the Eid prayer, which is traditionally led by the Leader of Iran\\\'s Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. Since Eid Al-Fitr and its special prayers is an occasion for Muslims to forget further unity, leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has waned Muslims of a plot to sow division among the Islamic Ummah. Ayatollah Khamenei also said Islam\\\'s enemies are using sophisticated tools to achieve their goals. He also hailed the public for the massive turnout on the International al-Quds Day across the world. He said the occasion keeps the Palestinian cause alive and will have significant implications for the future of the Muslim world.

The Rohingya Association of Canada demands the following from the Burmese Government: 1. Independent international commission of inquiry must be allowed to probe current Arakan crisis and bring the perpetrators to justice. 2. Allow international relief organizations to provide open access to the region and distribute urgently needed humanitarian aid to the victims. 3. Provide security for the Rohingya who are at the mercy of Rakhine extremist elements and the racist security forces. 4. Allow fair and balanced coverage of the situation by the mainstream media. 5. Repeal the unjust 1982 Citizenship Law that aimed to cleanse Rohingya from Arakan and Burma, and restore their full rights as Burmese citizens as it was before 1962 6. A UN panel has urged Myanmar to stop Buddhist violence against Rohingya Muslims but the resolution has seen opposition from an unlikely source: The party of Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Chee. In its resolution, the UN General Assembly\'s human rights committee has called on Myanmar to give the Rohingya minority equal access to citizenship. But the demand apparently didn\'t sit well with the West\'s democracy icon Suu Chee, whose party accused the UN of interfering in Myanmar\'s internal affairs. Buddhist violence against Rohingya which is said to have the state backing has become routine in Myanmar. It\'s left hundreds dead and sent another 240-thousand fleeing their homes. But Suu Chee has had little to say about Rohingya rights. And she even declined to meet with the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation delegation visiting Myanmar this week to look into the plight of Muslims.

Millions of Shia Muslims in Iran mark Arba\\\'een ceremonies across the country. Iranians have marked one of the most important events on the Shia religious calendar, Arbaeen. This marks 40 days since the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shia Imam. Forty days is the usual length of mourning in many Islamic cultures, and the fortieth day is marked with a mourning ceremony. Imam Hussein is immortalized by Shias for choosing death instead of subjugation to a tyrant. His movement has come to symbolize resistance against tyranny and oppression. The movement of Imam Hussein is one of the central aspects of the Shia Muslim belief and still after hundreds of years Shia Muslims commemorate this day.
