The US administration warns the Congress that passing new sanctions against Iran will prove to the world that America negotiates in bad faith. White House spokesman Jay Carney says passage of new sanctions will undermine efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution of the standoff over Iran\'s nuclear program. He stated that any new sanctions would give the Iranians Quote-- an excuse Unquote to push the terms of the Geneva nuclear agreement to the side. The latest push by the White House comes as several groups of Republican and Democratic senators are making efforts to target Iran with a new set of sanctions. Carney added that if Tehran failed to abide by the terms of the deal, the White House would support new sanctions against the country. [03 Aug 2012] Egypt new cabinet sworn in - English Egypt's new prime minister and his cabinet were sworn in on Thursday, the first government since the election of Mohammed Morsi as the country's first freely elected president. Prime Minister Hesham Qandil asked Egyptians to rally behind his new government, as he promised it would represent all the people and will work on achieving the demands of the people of Egypt. The new cabinet retains in his post Hosni Mubarak's defense minister of 20 years, Field Marshall Hussein Tantawi, a reflection of how the military which Tantawi heads, still holds overwhelming powers in the country.

A new round of US unilateral sanctions came into effect on July 1st, planned to affect the Iranian economy hugely. The sanctions target the barter of Iran\'s currency, the Rial, the country\'s auto sector, shipbuilding, and petroleum industry. New tightening sanctions are being imposed on Iranian nation while the country is dealing with an inflation rate of over 31%. Many political analysts believed that the United States was expected not to put into effect these new sanctions while a moderate candidate won the June presidential election. They had predicted that the US administration would defer their decision on the new sets of economic pressures. To their chagrin, now many countries as well as international companies have to choose between the US and Iran. In this edition of the show we will take a closer look at the new round of US sanctions against Iran.

Officials in Iraq\'s Kurdistan Region say they\'re making progress with forming the new government following September\'s elections. Kurdistan\'s main opposition party - the Change Movement - came second in the elections. The party has now agreed to join the government with the winning Kurdistan Democratic Party. The Change Movement and the Democratic Party have enough seats to form a majority. But Kurdistan\'s Islamic parties are also trying to join the new government. It\'s unclear who will take on the role of the opposition. The Change Movement is still discussing details of the new government with Kurdistan\'s Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani. The Democratic Party\'s historical partner - the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan - will also join the new government - despite its third place finish in the elections. However, officials say that Prime Minister Barzani wants to include other parties rather than continue the duopoly between the Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union.

[09 July 2012] New Pakistani PM granted immunity from prosecution - English Amid protests by the opposition parties, Pakistan's Lower House of the Parliament has passed a new Contempt Law which grants immunity to new Prime Minister and Federal Ministers from prosecution on contempt of court charges. The new law will help Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf to seek immunity from prosecution on contempt charges he could possibly face this Wednesday if he, like his predecessor, refuses to reopen money laundering cases against President Asif Zardari.

US President Barack Obama calls on Senate to delay imposing new sanctions on Iran, rejecting criticism by senators that Washington has not been tough on Iran. White House spokesman Jay Carney says that Obama has met top Democrats and Republicans from the Senate Armed Services, Intelligence and Foreign Relations committees and urged them to delay any decision on new Iran sanctions. As Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany are slated to hold fresh round of nuclear talks in Geneva on Wednesday, Obama tell the senators that new sanctions should not be enacted during the current negotiations. Meanwhile, a group of senators wrote to Secretary of State John Kerry, calling on the administration to make a tougher line on anti-Iran sanctions. The senators warned that easing the sanctions would not force Iran to abandon its pursuit of an alleged nuclear weapon. Obama says the proposed deal would permit a modest lifting of the economic sanctions on Iran.

Human rights groups in Egypt have condemned a new law on protests, saying it will restrict the right to peaceful assembly. Based on the new law, which was signed by the interim President Adly Mansour, protesters will have to receive permission from police in advance before staging any protests. The new law comes only days after the interim government allowed security forces to enter university campuses without prior permission. Meanwhile, Egyptian students have once again taken to the streets in the capital Cairo to demand an end to the military rule. Demonstrators were marking 100 days since security forces broke up sit-ins calling for ousted president Mohamed Morsi\'s reinstatement. The ensuing violence left hundreds dead. Tensions in Egypt have been running high since Morsi was ousted by the military in early July.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohamad Javad Zarif has advised the US against imposing new sanctions against Tehran. In an interview with Time magazine, Zarif said the Geneva nuclear deal is going to be QUOTE-dead if the US Congress imposes new sanctions, even if they do not take effect for six months. Two US senators are preparing legislation to impose new sanctions on Iran in six months if the deal goes nowhere. These sanctions would target Iran\'s oil exports, foreign exchange reserves, and industry. The senators are making the move despite the Geneva deal between Tehran and the P-five-plus-one group of countries, which includes the U-S. Washington has already imposed several rounds of illegal sanctions on Iran, causing problems mainly for ordinary Iranians.

Egyptian interim President Adly Mansour has sworn in the country\\\'s first government since the military ouster of former president, Mohamed Morsi, two weeks ago. Liberal economist Hazem el-Beblawi took his oath before army-appointed interim president to head the interim cabinet as new prime minister. In the interim government, Chief of the Armed Forces General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who led Morsi\\\'s removal from office, holds the post of first deputy prime minister while retaining his defense portfolio. Nabil Fahmy, who served as Egypt\\\'s ambassador to Washington from 1999 to 2008, holds the post of foreign minister and Morsi\\\'s interior minister, Mohammed Ibrahim, retains his portfolio. There are three women ministers in the new cabinet, including Health Minister Maha el-Rabat. The Muslim Brotherhood, which had earlier dismissed the interim government\\\'s reconciliation offer as lies, refused to recognize the new cabinet and denounced it as \\\"illegitimate.\\\"

U-S Undersecretary of State Wendy Sherman says she has asked Congress to put new sanctions against Iran on hold. Sherman -- who is also the main U-S negotiator in the negotiations on Iran\'s nuclear energy program -- says the pause should be taken to see whether talks with Iran can gain traction. The remarks come days after Iran and the five permanent members of the U-N Security Council plus Germany held a new round of talks in Geneva to resolve issues related to Tehran\'s nuclear energy program. Over the past few years, the U-S Congress has imposed several rounds of illegal unilateral sanctions on Iran to pressure the country to halt the uranium enrichment component of its nuclear energy program.

Khan Sa\'id has been chosen as the new leader of pro-Taliban militants in Pakistan. The militants\' number-two commander was promoted to the group\'s leader after former chief, Hakimullah Mehsud, was killed in a US drone strike on Friday. Security officials say Sa\'id was chosen as the new commander at a meeting of the supreme ruling council. However, some commanders are reportedly unhappy with the decision and want more talks. Islamabad accuses Washington of scuttling attempts to bring the Taliban militants to the negotiating table. Pakistan has threatened to review its ties with the US over the latest drone strike.

israel has revealed new plans for demolishing Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem al-Quds and the occupied West Bank. The Jerusalem municipality has begun issuing demolition orders for buildings in the city. Most of the orders are in two neighborhoods near the Shoafat refugee camp, in the north of al-Quds and the Palestinian side of the separation fence-- namely Ras Hamis and Ras Shehada. According to Palestinian sources, demolitions will leave some 15-thousand people homeless. This comes against the backdrop of Israel\'s new plans for building some 5-thousand settler units in the occupied Palestinian territories. Israel\'s settlement activities are considered illegal under international law.

An Egyptian panel tasked with drawing up the new draft constitution has approved an article that forbids the formation of religious parties. The document says any political party founded on a quote religious basis will be prohibited. The ban was in place during long-time dictator Hosni Mubarak\'s rule. The panel says 138 articles of the total 247 articles have been approved. If adopted in full, the charter will be put to a popular referendum early next year. Rights groups say the new charter strengthens the military. Muslim Brotherhood supporters accuse the military-backed government of having anti-democratic tendencies. They say the proposed amendments are contrary to the goals of the 2011 revolution that ended decades of dictatorship.

Destourian Front. It\'s the name of a new political front in Tunisia, which was formed earlier this year mainly by politicians of ousted ruler Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. Many government officials, businessmen and lawyers have joined the new coalition. It\'s now seeking to take part in next year\'s elections, with some members being confident that it will win the vote.

Political turmoil in Egypt. The country\'s constituent assembly has approved a new draft constitution. The Muslim Brotherhood has already rejected the charter. The Brotherhood has slammed interim authorities, saying they\'re distorting Egypt\'s legitimate constitution which was adopted during Mohammed Morsi\'s presidency. The final draft was approved by a 50-member constituent assembly and will now be handed to the military-backed interim president. Adly Mansour is expected to set a date for a referendum on the charter. The draft calls for elections, parliamentary or presidential, within 90 days after the adoption of the constitution. If approved, the new constitution will strengthen the army\'s hand. It will also forbid the formation of parties based on religious grounds.

Weeks after Iran signed a landmark deal with the permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany, more signs emerge that some members of the Congress are already preparing to torpedo it. Several key senators have asked intelligence officials to examine whether a new set of sanctions would derail the nuclear talks with Iran. The request was made by the chairmen of the Senate\'s banking, intelligence, and armed services committees, and the reply should be ready in less than a week. The senators have also asked intelligence officials to provide briefings to the chamber -- once every 45 days starting on February first -- on whether Iran is complying with the deal. Some members of Congress are pushing for a new list of sanctions against Iran. But the White House is calling on senators to hold off. It says new sanctions against Iran would make Washington appear to be acting in bad faith in its nuclear outreach to Tehran.

U-S Secretary of State John Kerry says any new sanctions on Iran would send a wrong message to the countries involved in the nuclear negotiations with Tehran. Kerry made the remarks in a briefing to U-S Congressmen about the recent nuclear deal between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany. Kerry said that new sanctions would eventually lead to the removal of all sanctions because the other negotiating partners would not follow suit. At one point, Kerry also said the military option against Iran is not off the table. But he stated he hopes the Iran nuclear issue can be resolved in less than six months

Vladimir Putin was speaking at his annual news conference in Moscow in response to a question by Press TV correspondent\'s about the recent US sanctions against Iran. Moscow has strongly opposed any sanctions outside the UN Security Council against Iran. The latest US sanctions came despite last month\'s nuclear deal, between Iran and the P-five-plus-one group, which does not allow new sanctions against Tehran.
