Supreme Leader visits Tehran Book Fair Tehran Times Culture Desk TEHRAN - Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei paid a visit to the 24th Tehran International Book Fair on Wednesday. Ayatollah Khamenei visited several pavilions and held talks with officials, publishers, and organizers of the fair. Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Mohammad Hosseini and the director of the fair, Bahman Dorri, accompanied the Leader, the Supreme Leader’s official website reported on Wednesday. Books are irreplaceable, and the number of books published in Iran has risen over the past few years, but even more books need to be published, the Leader said. Writers have also made diligent efforts but need to develop further, he stated. National development is not possible if the book industry does not develop, he said, adding that the Culture Ministry should focus on the publication of books. Publishers also had the opportunity to talk about their problems. Over 2300 Iranian and 1600 foreign publishers from 67 countries are displaying their products at the fair. The book fair is being held at the Imam Khomeini Mosalla and runs until May 14.

The Emirati foreign minister, Abdullah bin Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan is in the Iranian capital Tehran for an official visit. Abdullah bin Zayed arrived in Tehran\'s MehrAbad airport earlier in the day. There, he was welcomed by his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif, and the two held talks afterwards. Abdullah bin Zayed has also met with Iran\'s President Hassan Rouhani. This is the first trip by the UAE\'s foreign minister to Iran in years and since president Rouhani took office in August this year. Tehran and Abu Dhabi have billions of dollars in annual trade.

Italian Foreign Minister Emma Bonino who is in Tehran on an official visit has met with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. During the meeting, President Rouhani said the level of relations between Iran and Italy is below expectation and all available capacities must be used to expand it. President Rouhani added that Italy has acted as an important partner in its relations with Iran and expressed happiness about Rome\'s willingness to expand ties with Tehran. He added that cooperation between the two sides can lay the foundation of mutual trust between Iran and Europe. Emma Bonino for her part said that Italy\'s interests lie in expanding and developing ties with Iran. She added that Rome is eager to expand relations with Tehran in economic, industrial, energy, tourism and scientific fields.

The European Union and the US have decided to lift some economic sanctions on Iran after Tehran stopped its production of 20-percent enriched uranium. EU officials say the decision is part of a landmark nuclear deal between Tehran and the permanent members of the U-N Security Council plus Germany. A statement by the European bloc says the suspension is for a period of six months. Meanwhile, American authorities also say that the US secretary of state has approved Iran\'s sanctions relief waiver. The White House, however, says the US will continue its QUOTE aggressive enforcement of sanction measures that remain in place against Iran. This comes after it was confirmed that Tehran has carried out its part of the Geneva agreement.

A high-rise building has collapsed in the Iran capital Tehran after a fire engulfed its top floors. The fire broke out at the 17-story structure in downtown Tehran on Thursday morning. Scores of firefighters were deployed to battle the blaze. However, their efforts remained futile. Many people including firefighters are trapped. Thirty-eight people are also reported to have been injured in the incident. The 50-year-old building was among the first high-rises built in Tehran. It included a shopping center and clothing workshops, which had been evacuated. A short film by PressTv-Borj-e Milad (aka Milad Tower, Persian: برج میلاد ) (Persian: birth) is the tallest tower in Iran. Built in between the Shahrak-e Gharb and Gisha districts of Tehran, it stands 435 m (1,427 ft) high from base to tip of the antenna. The head consists of a large pod with 12 floors, the roof of which is at 315 m (1,033 ft). Below this is a staircase and elevators to reach the area. Milad tower is the fourth tallest tower in the world after the CN Tower in Toronto, Ostankino Tower in Moscow, and the Oriental Pearl Tower in Shanghai. It is also currently 12th tallest freestanding structure in the world. Milad tower is part of The Tehran International Trade and Convention Center. The project includes the Milad telecommunication tower offering restaurants at the top with spectacular views of Tehran, a five-star hotel, a convention center, a world trade center, and an IT park (to be completed by March 2007). The complex seeks to respond to the needs of business in the globalized world of the 21st century by offering facilities combining trade, information, communication, convention and accommodation all in one place. The complex features a parking area of 27,000 square meters, a large computer and telecommunication unit, a cultural and scientific unit, a commercial transaction center, a temporary showroom for exhibiting products, a specialized library, an exhibition hall and an administrative unit. Milad Tower has an octagonal base, symbolizing traditional Persian architecture.
