The Syrian army has launched an offensive in the strategic Qalamun region to retake the town of Yabrud from al-Qaeda-linked militants.
Security sources say the army is advancing around the town and is expected to take control of the town soon. Yabrud has been under the control of militants since 2011. It\'s the last major town in the Qalamun region the army\'s fighting to retake. The town\'s located near the Lebanese border and explosives used in bombings in Lebanon are reportedly smuggled into the country from there.

Foreign-backed insurgents in Syria have kidnapped 12 nuns from a convent in the Christian town of Ma\'lula. Local authorities say the insurgents have taken the nuns to the nearby town of Yabrud. There is no word on the fate of the nuns, but militants are usually known to kill people they kidnap. The insurgents have entered Ma\'lula several months after they were pushed out of the historic town. The Syrian army has been battling the insurgents in the regions near the capital Damascus. The army has cleared many towns and villages of the insurgents. Sources close to the militants have admitted that government forces have been making significant gains near Damascus and elsewhere in the country.

Reports from Syria say Kurdish fighters have managed to recapture a key town in the country\'s north-east.
Press TV sources say the Kurdish People\'s Protection Units, known as YPG, have regained control of Tall Hamis town near the Turkish border. The Kurdish fighters retook the town following fierce fighting with the Al-Qaeda linked militants, who were heavily occupying the area. Reports say the YPG forces have also advanced in al-Husseinia village which is located near Tal Hamis. The victory is not the first for the YPG, as the group has previously taken control over several areas in the region.

Reports coming out of Syria suggest that insurgents battling government troops have seized a town in the southern Daraa province.
Militants took control of Tafas following weeks of heavy clashes with army forces. The fighting has left dozens dead on both sides. The town of Tafas links the eastern and western parts of Daraa along the Jordanian border. In another battlefield in the central province of Homs, insurgents and government troops are fighting for control of a highly-strategic arsenal in Mahin. Militants say they have killed at least a hundred Syrian army forces, and lost scores of their own men.

Reports coming out of Syria suggest that the army has retaken control of the ancient Christian town of Sadad from al-Qaeda-linked militants.
This follows week-long clashes in the town, which is located north of Damascus. Al-Nusra Front insurgents had recently captured key areas of the town, including a checkpoint that gave them control of the western part. The fighting forced many people to flee to the nearby city of Homs or remain trapped in their homes. Sadad has a strategic location near the main highway leading to the Syrian capital.

Syrian soldiers have secured the al-Dweireneh town, east of the al-Nayrab airport in Aleppo. This is the latest in a series of army advances across the country over the recent weeks. On Tuesday, army units regained full control of the Qara town in the strategic al-Qalamoun area in the countryside of the capital Damascus. They also freed a number of towns there. The Qalamoun region is used by militants to cross into Syria from Lebanon.

Syrian army has retaken control of a town near the capital Damascus after fierce battles with foreign-backed insurgents.
The battles raged on around Deir Atiyah in Qalamoun area that links Damascus to the central city of Homs and east of the capital. The Syrian army has launched a new round of mop-up operations. Clashes are also underway in Marj area near the capital. Some reports say, the army forces have killed at least nine insurgents in the area. Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since March 2011. Damascus accuses the West and its regional allies of fueling tension by providing the insurgents with money and weapons.

That\'s according to the secretariat of the Patriarch of Antioch and All the East for the Melkite Greek Catholic Church. The militants have reportedly removed the bells of all the churches, burned the crosses, and stolen the bronze statue of Christ. The ancient Christian town of Ma\'lula has been the site of fierce fighting for months now, and thousands of its residents have fled to safer parts of the country including Damascus. Al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front insurgents stormed the Orthodox Mar Takla convent in the town in December and abducted several nuns. Christians make up about 10 percent of Syria\'s population. The religious minority and its holy sites have been subjected to numerous attacks by militants since the outbreak of violence Syria in 2011.

This is al-Cherubim monastery on top of a mountain in al-Qalamoun region in Damascus countryside. Foreign- backed militants continuously attack the monastery coming from Rankous in an attempt to reach and take over Sednaya town in Damascus countryside.
More than one hundred Takfiri militants from the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra front and brigades of the so-called Free Syrian Army were killed during an attack they launched on Sunday against the monastery. Machineguns, RPGs and other types of weapons were seized. Militants in Badda, Talfita and Rankous areas which surround Sednaya increased their mortar attacks on the town following their defeat. A shell hit a school while another fell in the vicinity of Saint George Monastery. The Syrian army responded with gunfire.
