In 1947, the British viceroy announced that after 200 years of British rule, India would gain independence and be partitioned into Hindu India and Muslim Pakistan. What followed was one of the largest and bloodiest forced migrations in history: an estimated 1 million people lost their lives. What caused this violent aftermath? Haimanti Roy details the lasting legacies of the Partition of India.

India has started to pay for Iranian crude oil in its own currency. For the first time last week India's Hindustan Petroleum paid 2.75 billion Rupees through this system.
The money went into Iran's newly opened account in India's UCO bank. The amount equaling $ 50 million was the partial payment for its oil imports in the month of May.

The two countries have a longstanding border dispute. It led to a bloody battle between them in 1962. India accuses China of occupying 38,000 square kilometers of its territory in the disputed region of Jammu and Kashmir, while the government in Beijing lays claim to 90,000 square kilometers of land in the state of Arunachal Pradesh in northeast India.

New Delhi says Pakistani forces fired mortars on at least 50 Indian border posts overnight. It says one guard was killed and six injured in the incident. The violence comes after India\'s home minister visited the region to review security. The attack has been described as the most serious violation of the 2003 cease-fire between the two neighbors in the past decade.

Latest market data show India has drastically increased oil imports from Iran-- in a clear proof of Iran\'s success in defying sanctions that have targeted its oil trade.
Figures show India imported about 200-thousand barrels per day of Iranian oil in September. This is roughly twice the figure for August. Earlier, similar market data showed that Iran had succeeded in becoming the top oil exporter to China in September after a series of slowdowns over the past months. Iran\'s Petroleum Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh had earlier said that serious plans were on agenda to boost the country\'s oil exports by four times. That would be in the face of illegal sanctions by the U-S and its allies that primarily target Iran\'s oil trade.

India\'s exports to Iran have increased by 40 percent over the past year and Indian officials expect further increase in this area. The sudden increase is direct fallout of the United States and EU sanctions against Iran.
Exports include rice, cereals, pharmaceutical products, machine tools, automobile parts and steel. Rice and textile exports have witnessed the biggest jump.
India tea exports to Iran are also likely to surge by around 50 percent compared to the previous year.
